Writing cover letters

A cover letter introduces a prospective employer to you and your CV/résumé; giving you your first chance to make a good impression.

Do:

  • Keep it brief, structured and relevant
  • Include the job title, job reference number and where you saw the post advertised
  • Outline your current situation and explain why you are interested in moving
  • Highlight any skills and training that you have achieved
  • Make sure you include all requested information, such as your current or expected salary.

Don’t:

  • Use ‘sir’ or ‘madam’ – address it to the proper contact if you can
  • Repeat information that you’ve already covered in your CV.
