Writing cover letters
A cover letter introduces a prospective employer to you and your CV/résumé; giving you your first chance to make a good impression.
Do:
- Keep it brief, structured and relevant
- Include the job title, job reference number and where you saw the post advertised
- Outline your current situation and explain why you are interested in moving
- Highlight any skills and training that you have achieved
- Make sure you include all requested information, such as your current or expected salary.
Don’t:
- Use ‘sir’ or ‘madam’ – address it to the proper contact if you can
- Repeat information that you’ve already covered in your CV.
